Between the 53-man roster and the practice squad, the Jacksonville Jaguars will have four quarterbacks entering the 2026 season.
Trevor Lawrence will lead the way, while Quinn Ewers is the backup on the 53-man. Nick Mullens will be on the practice squad, but will still provide a veteran presence.
But along with those three, the Jaguars also brought back Joey Aguilar to the practice squad. He signed with Jacksonville after the 2026 NFL draft as a UDFA.
Throughout offseason programs and training camp, Liam Coen liked what he saw from Aguilar and wants to continue working with him to see if he can unlock that untapped potential he possesses.
"I thought he did some nice things, and he kind of has a little gamer in him," Coen said on Wednesday. "He's
got a little feel. The game makes sense to him. We want to see, keep working with him, keep developing, keep getting him in our system because it's very different than what he was doing in college. And some of that stuff has been a work, but he's calm on game day, man. Like he's got a good demeanor. I've really liked working with him thus far. I think he's gotten better. So it's good."
Coen also mentioned that having an extra quarterback at practice allows for more "efficient" and better work for the skill position players, with there being an extra arm to lean on.
Aguilar was efficient during the preseason, completing 17-of-20 passes for 230 yards with a score, while showcasing his ability to generate some explosive plays through the air as well.
Refinement is still needed for Aguilar as he navigates the steep learning curve that comes with a UDFA quarterback making the jump to the NFL, but he's showcased plenty of promise as well during his stint in Jacksonville.
