One anonymous NFL source recently spoke with The Athletic's Jonathan Jones about Travis Hunter's playing time and usage through the Jacksonville Jaguars' first two games.
This has become a topic of conversation this past week, with Hunter seemingly being underutilized.
However, according to a few of Jones' sources in Jacksonville, that is part of the early-season plan.
“He’s only played a total of nine games in his career so it’s still very early in his career,” one source told Jones. “He’ll help us win games this year and will continue to grow on both sides of the ball.”
Nearly all of Hunter's reps have come at cornerback, where he's played 66 snaps. However, that accounts for just 58% of the Jaguars' total defensive snaps, with Jacksonville relying
on a rotation at this position. On offense, Hunter has played only 11 snaps.
As one source said, Hunter suffered a knee injury last season that limited him to seven games as a rookie. This early season approach is part of the ramp-up process.
“He’s been doing well,” a second source said to Jones. “Obviously, still working back from not playing football for a long time. (I) think he’s going to only keep getting better.”
Hunter has one reception for eight yards on offense, while at cornerback, he's surrendered three receptions on four targets for 28 yards with a pass breakup. He's been penalized once as well.
