TheJacksonville Jaguars announced 15 practice squad signings, and included in that group were veteran quarterback Nick Mullens and 2025 draft picks Jalen McLeod and Jack Kiser, all of whom were let go on cutdown day.
The Jaguars released Mullens after trading for Quinn Ewers. However, while Ewers is the backup, retaining Mullens could prove to be valuable.
Part of the backup quarterback's job description is being an extra set of eyes and a sounding board for the starter in meeting rooms, on the practice field, and on the sidelines during games.
While the Jaguars clearly like Ewers' upside, Mullens' experience in the NFL provides a different lens to look through, one that could still be beneficial for Trevor Lawrence.
Kiser, a fourth-round pick in
2025, filled a special-teams-heavy role as a rookie. A knee injury, however, sidelined him for nearly all of training camp. At the start of training camp, he was in line to be Foye Oluokun's backup at middle linebacker.
McLeod, meanwhile, was a sixth-round selection in 2025, but he missed his rookie season due to injury. He brings a unique skill set to the linebacker room, able to double as an edge rusher. This summer, McLeod was able to flash his playmaking potential.
