A priority throughout the entire offseason -- not only training camp -- for the Jacksonville Jaguars was on the increased chemistry between Trevor Lawrence and Brian Thomas Jr.
Now, at the end of training camp, that rapport between the two has certainly seemed to grow.
"The trust between us, because we've communicated so much, has just grown a lot," Lawrence said, via Jaguars.com. "Certain routes, I know exactly what he's going to do. He's really consistent in his approach and what he does. He tells you something and how he's going to run a route, and then he goes and he does it like that."
Lawrence continued, "It sounds simple, but not everyone's like that. I've played with a lot of guys that are really good receivers, but you say you're going
to run it one way, then you get in the game or the live period and the route looks completely different. He's not one of those guys."
Where that increased chemistry has seemed to take hold the most is on downfield throws -- an area of the field where Thomas Jr. could see more opportunities this season. Throughout offseason programs and training camp, the two were often able to connect when pushing the ball downfield.
Being more effective in this area will not only create more explosive plays for the Jaguars' offense, but with the attention that Thomas Jr. can command from opposing defenses, that will open up opportunities for others in the offense.
"He's really detailed," added Lawrence, "and he's really smart and building that trust to where it's gotten to the point now where I'm letting a lot of these throws go before he's even starting his cut."
That said, Thomas Jr.'s combination of speed and route running abilities will allow him to make an impact at every level of the field.
In the Liam Coen offense, the weekly matchups and in-game situations may dictate who the top receiver is each week, but regardless, Thomas Jr. will continue to play a very important role in this Jacksonville offense.
