Maybe Tyson Bagent ain't it, after all. Conventional wisdom holds that Bagent is a top 32 overall quarterback in the NFL.
Well, after yesterday- that convention is now probably canceled. Is Bagent really good enough to start for some other teams? Well, maybe, but also slow your roll on that one.
Bagent was hooked, in the Bears' 31-7 blowout loss to their bitter arch-rivals, the Green Bay Packers. Ben Johnson probably waited a quarter too long to bench Bagent, as Case Keenum did perform better. Not all that much better, but noticeably better. He's 38, and in his 14th season, and didn't even play last season.
Bagent played brutally awful, in a game where many thought the Bears would play extremely inspired, due to the passing of their iconic former
coach, Mike Ditka. Bagent went 12-21 for only 87 yards, yielding a very unsightly 4.1 yards per pass.
His QBR was terrible, as 21.8 and his QB rating was also disastrous, at 27.4. Maybe he recovers from this, and goes on to have a solid season, but even if he does, the Bears need depth in the QB room.
Caleb Williams looks poised to rewrite the Bears passing/quarterbacking record book, so don't expect Chicago to draft a signal caller until day three (rounds 4-6). Or perhaps maybe even in late day two (round 3).
Here are a couple that could still be on the board, around the time that the Bears might start to look at taking a QB.
Drake Lindsey, Minnesota
At 6-5, 230, he's got ideal size for the next level. He could come out in the 2027 class, which would make sense if this year goes well for him. Last season, he threw 18 TD passes against only six interceptions. wait until 2028 or 2029, those are options as well.
LaNorris Sellers, South Carolina
He's had an up-and-down career, to say the least, but his dual threat skill set is undeniably elite. He's on an upswing now, having tossed five touchdown passes on Saturday, to lead the Gamecocks to an upset of #16 Florida.
