We still don't know yet where the Chicago Bears will ultimately be playing, once their days at Soldier Field are finally threw. Northwest suburban Arlington Heights is the front-runner, supposedly. Unless it's actually not. Until we see shovels in the ground, and hard hats at work, it's all just talk and as you know, talk is cheap.
Let's focus on what we do know, the Bears need to improve their pass defense. Beefing up at safety is always a good idea, and perhaps the Monsters of the Midway will do just that, in the 2027 NFL Draft.
Here are three safety prospects they should take a look at.
Brauntae Johnson, Notre Dame
He's also referred to as Tae Johnson, so if you see that name, don't get confused, it's the same guy.
Notre Dame is the most popular college football team in
the Chicagoland area, so any time you can keep that Fighting Irish-Bears pipeline going, it works on multiple levels.
The residents of Chicago neighborhoods like Beverly or Mt. Greenwood would love this pick. Tae made all the preseason All-America teams, and thus far, he's certainly lived up to the hype. And then some.
Peyton Bowen, Oklahoma
Bowen embodies the idea of "playing centerfield" from the safety position. Northwestern safety Robert Fitzgerald perfectly summated this concept.
"Yeah, I think safety's got to be one of the most fun positions in football because you really get to see the entire field, and I think you got the best view of what's going on in a football game," Fitzgerald said.
"Especially when you're playing the deep half or the deep part of the middle field, you really are like a center field out there in baseball. It's great."
Bowen playing centerfield, at an elite level, could help solidify the deep third. If defensive coordinator Dennis Allen can find somebody to do that, his scheme would work even more effectively.
KJ Bolden, Georgia
Despite the fact that the NFL is a pass-first league, with rule changes in recent years to help facilitate more passing offense. Thar said, safeties are still not prioritized too highly in the draft. Bolden is most likely the top safety prospect in this draft, and he could still be on the boards in the late teens or even the early 20s.
Bolden has elite level athleticism, with closing speed that rivals any other prospect in the class of 2027.
