The New Orleans Saints are releasing running back Zamir White less than a week after acquiring him from the San Francisco 49ers, according to Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football. White was added in exchange for linebacker Deion Jones as New Orleans searched for depth amid a string of running back injuries.
A former Las Vegas Raiders fourth-round pick, White made his Saints debut in Friday's 27-24 preseason win over the Dallas Cowboys. White carried the ball four times for 23 yards, including an 11-yard touchdown run, though the late audition didn't secure a spot on the team's initial 53-man roster.
White's departure is notable with Alvin Kamara sidelined by a sprained MCL, Ty Chandler down with a season-ending knee injury, and Audric Estime banged
up vs the Cowboys. Travis Etienne Jr. and Kendre Miller appear positioned to be at the top of the room, while Devin Neal (dealing with another hamstring injury) and CJ Donaldson have also competed for reserve roles.
The Saints essentially used Jones, who appeared unlikely to make the team, to get a one-week look at White before making its final decision. That decision is in: After rushing for 736 yards and two touchdowns across four seasons with the Raiders and joining the Saints over the last week, White is now searching for his next opportunity. Because he is a vested veteran with enough accrued seasons, he won't have to test the waiver wire and can sign with a new team or the Saints' practice squad, depending on how they're evaluating various injuries in the New Orleans backfield.
