Former New Orleans Saints kicker Blake Grupe is getting another opportunity in the NFL, this time with the Los Angeles Rams. Grupe is joining the Rams to replace struggling kicker Harrison Mevis, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.
The New York Jets claimed Grupe off waivers after the NFL's roster cuts to 53 players, but he never appeared in a regular-season game for New York. Instead, the team moved him to its practice squad, where he never got the chance to kick in a game.
Now, Grupe will get a fresh start in Los Angeles under special teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone. Garafolo noted that both Grupe and Ventrone previously spent time with the Indianapolis Colts organization, though their tenures didn't overlap.
Saints fans know Grupe well.
He began his NFL career in New Orleans as an undrafted free agent in 2023. He won the team's kicking competition that summer and went on to handle field-goal and extra-point duties for the Saints. His time in New Orleans featured impressive kicks but also frustrating misses, particularly when consistency was needed.
Grupe will now look to establish himself with the Rams and potentially turn his latest opportunity into a longer-term role. Los Angeles has struggled on special teams this season, including a blocked kick in overtime of their Week 5 loss to the Buffalo Bills—one that ultimately dropped their record to 2-3, despite being preseason Super Bowl favorites.
