This was expected move, but there could be another shoe about to drop. The New Orleans Saints are waiving backup quarterback Hunter Dekkers ahead of Sunday's NFL roster cuts deadline, as first reported by Mike Triplett for NewOrleans.Football and confirmed by ESPN's Katherine Terrell. Dekkers was buried on the depth chart behind Tyler Shough, Spencer Rattler, and Zach Wilson which meant he didn't see a single rep in team drills at training camp. That didn't stop the Saints from throwing him into a two-minute drill during a preseason game to see if he could sink or swim. The left-handed quarterback almost pulled it off.
As we suggested, this may not be the end of the line for Dekkers in New Orleans. The Saints signed him to their practice squad
last year as an undrafted rookie, waited for his injured shoulder to heal up during the season, and let him go to try his hand in the UFL. When the spring league wrapped up, he was welcomed back in time for training camp. Maybe the southpaw gets smore time to develop on the practice squad this year. Or maybe another team likes what they've seen from his UFL game tape and plucky preseason cameo enough to claim him off waivers. Stay tuned.
