It's finally here -- Atlanta Falcons Hate Week. The New Orleans Saints are gearing up for the next battle in their decadeslong war with their oldest rivals, with the dirty birds set to visit the Caesars Superdome on a Sept. 28 Monday Night Football feature. That makes for easy pickings in our Saints Play of the Day.
First up is this 80-yard touchdown pass from Drew Brees to Lance Moore. Facing 2nd-and-25 from his own 20-yard line, Brees took the snap out of shotgun and dropped back another five steps to survey the field. That bought enough time for Moore to get over the top of the Atlanta defense. Brees threw from his own 11 to the 50-yard line, hitting Moore in stride so he could take it to the house. a huge game with six catches for 149 yards and two touchdowns, also filling in for Reggie Bush on special teams with a 72-yard punt return to start the day.
But this wouldn't be a rivalry game if that were the end of it. Moore's long touchdown gave the Saints a 14-7 lead, but that was just one of five lead changes in a matchup that went to overtime. After forcing a quick three-and-out to start the extra period, the Saints got the ball back and drove down to the Atlanta 11-yard line. With nine minutes left to play, Sean Payton opted to kick a short field goal on first down rather than keep pushing. Garrett Hartley shanked it right wide, and the Falcons ended up kicking a game-winner themselves (on their third try, after Payton's timeout negated a blocked kick and a Falcons false start gave them another chance). Hopefully the next chapter won't be so dramatic.
