We're finally seeing some accountability for thee NFL's officiating crews. Two of them were suspended on Monday following altercations with players during Week 4's games: longtime head referee Adrian Hill and line judge Jeff Seeman, a 25-year veteran on referee Shawn Smith's crew. As copied and pasted by ESPN's Adam Schefter, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo, and The Ringer's Tom Pelissero
in identical tweets:The NFL confirmed today that line judge Jeff Seeman has been suspended for two games and referee Adrian Hill has been suspended for one game, each for an instance of unprofessional conduct toward a player in Sunday’s Arizona-New York Giants (Seeman) and Miami-Minnesota games (Hill). The suspensions were issued by NFL Vice President
of Officiating Ramon George.
Seeman went viral in a video clip from the sideline, where he repeatedly cursed at Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride as the pass catcher asked for a defensive pass interference foul. Hill caught flak for shoving Minnesota Vikings linebacker Eric Wilson's helping hand away from him after being inadvertently pushed to the ground during a play, and shouting into the defender's face once he regained his footing. Both incidents made for a bad look, but together they highlight a culture of officials all too eager to throw their weight around.
Before that, Hill refereed the Saints' Week 3 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, a game full of frustrating officiating decisions. Maybe a week on the couch will teach him a lesson.
