The New Orleans Saints won't be getting Terrell Burgess back on their practice squad. The Tennessee Titans are signing the veteran safety to the active roster, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo. New Orleans released Burgess on Sunday while working its roster down to the initial 53-player limit.
It's a bit disappointing; the signing closes the door on a potential return to the Saints' practice squad for Burgess. Players with his level of NFL experience are free to sign elsewhere after being released, and an immediate spot on the Titans' active roster gives him a better opportunity than anything New Orleans could've offered on its practice squad.
Burgess spent the 2025 season with the Saints after bouncing around the league during the first
several years of his career. He gave New Orleans experienced depth in the secondary and contributed on special teams. The team brought him back for another opportunity this season, and Burgess spent training camp competing for one of the final spots in a crowded defensive back room. Still, they ultimately went in another direction when settling the initial roster.
The 27-year-old safety entered the NFL out of Utah as a third-round pick, selected No. 104 overall by the Los Angeles Rams (with Brandon Staley coaching their defense) in the 2020 NFL Draft. He has spent time with several teams, including the New York Giants and Washington Commanders, carving out a role as a versatile reserve defensive back and special-teams contributor.
Now, Burgess' stay in New Orleans is officially over. The Titans gave him an immediate chance to remain on an active NFL roster entering the regular season, and that's something that he couldn't turn down.
