Sunday's NFL roster cuts deadline is just one part of a busy process leading up to the start of the regular season. The New Orleans Saints
are positioned well to make some claims on the waiver wire when teams report their roster cuts at 5 p.m. CT on Sunday, Aug. 30 -- many of the players being let go will be available for claims by other teams, which will be processed at Noon CT on Monday, Aug. 31.Because the waiver priority is determined by 2026 draft order, the Saints slot in at No. 8. They pick behind the Las Vegas Raiders (No. 1), New York Jets (No. 2), Tennessee Titans (No. 4) and Cleveland Browns (No. 6) of the AFC as well as their NFC rivals like the Arizona Cardinals (No. 3), New York Giants (No. 5), and Washington Commanders (No. 7).
This will remain the waiver priority until Sept. 29 (Week 4 of the regular season), at which point the order is shuffled based on current standings and strength of schedule (among other tiebreakers) after the first three weeks of action.
As a refresher: any team can submit a waiver claim for an eligible player, but only the team with the highest priority will be awarded them. Teams do not revert to the back of the line after being awarded a player like in some fantasy football formats. On top of that, any player claimed on waivers must replace someone else on the 53-man roster. So a player who thought he was safe on Sunday may end up being let go himself on Monday. It's a cold side of the business. We saw the Saints pick up some guys on waivers last summer like offensive lineman Xavier Truss and wide receiver Trey Palmer. They also added tight end Zaire Mitchell-Paden from waivers during the season.
