On Wednesday afternoon, the New Orleans Saints announced two additions to their secondary. The Saints signed cornerbacks Michael Davis and David Long Jr. in advance of the preseason finale against the Dallas Cowboys on Friday. Long and Davis fill the roster openings left when New Orleans placed tight end Moliki Matavao and running back Ty Chandler on injured reserve.
Davis, 31, is a nine-year NFL veteran who was also picked up by New Orleans last year. He played 11 games for the Saints in 2025, appearing in only 9 defensive plays but 114 snaps on special teams. Davis played collegiately for the BYU Cougars and was signed in 2017 as an undrafted rookie by the Los Angeles Chargers. He'd play his first seven seasons for the Chargers through 2023.
The last three of those years were under Chargers head coach Brandon Staley, the current New Orleans defensive coordinator. Between 2019 and 2023, Davis started 65 contests and had 8 interceptions with 60 passes broken up.
Long, 28, is a seven-year NFL veteran most recently with the Carolina Panthers, appearing in one game for Carolina last year. He played collegiately for the Michigan Wolverines and was a third round choice of the Los Angeles Rams in the 2019 NFL Draft. Long played his first four years with the Rams though 2022. His defensive coordinator at Los Angeles in 2020 was Brandon Staley. After being with three teams in 2023, the Colts in 2024, and the Panthers last season, Long was released by the Giants in early August. He's been a reserve corner and special teamer most of his career, with 1 career interception and 8 passes broken up.
Both Long and Davis are expected to see action when the Saints close out their preseason against the Cowboys on Friday. New Orleans has also recently placed backup corner Rezjohn Wright on season-ending injured reserve, and with Quincy Riley missing practice reps while dealing with his own injury, there's an opportunity for either player to swipe a roster spot.
