The New Orleans Saints have a new long snapper. Three free agents tried out after Zach Wood suffered a "significant" injury at practice, and Scott Daly got the call, reports Nick Underhill for NewOrleans.Football. With Wood expected to miss the next month recovering from a Grade 2 calf strain, Daly will be replacing him.
Expect Daly to come up from the practice squad for a couple of weeks before being promoted to the 53-man roster. NFL rules allow teams to elevate practice squad players three times before they're required to sign with the active roster in order to keep playing.
Daly, 32, played college football at Notre Dame and has appeared in 76 games with the Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears. He also has spent time with the Dallas Cowboys, Tampa
Bay Buccaneers, and Green Bay Packers in between a few stops on spring league teams in the short-lived AAF and XFL.
In addition to Daly, the Saints worked out long snappers Luke Basso and Niko Lalos on Thursday. Lalos previously had two stints on the practice squad in New Orleans and has taken up long snapping full-time to try and extend his career. We'll see if Daly can hold onto the job now that he's got it, at least until Wood is healthy and ready to return.
