Heading into tonight's game, New Orleans Saints quarterback Tyler Shough has a lot to prove against an Atlanta Falcons defense that humbled him and put a halt to his fast start late last season.
Coming off an impressive victory over the Carolina Panthers in Week 10, in which Shough showed glimpses of his star potential, the Atlanta defense, led by current defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich, put a stop to the quarterback's uprising. Shough's Week 12 performance didn't tell the entire story on the stat sheet. He completed 30 of his 43 pass attempts, which looks like an efficient day, but his 243 passing yards, zero touchdowns and one interception proved costly in the Saints' 24-10 loss to the Falcons. New Orleans wasn't able to get much going down the field
and failed to establish a consistent run game, allowing Atlanta to tee off on Shough. The Falcons sacked the young quarterback five times throughout the game, making it difficult for the Saints offense to find any rhythm.
But Shough would get another crack at Atlanta later in the season, and this time, the results were much different. In the Saints' Week 18 matchup against the Falcons, Shough put together a much stronger performance, completing 23 of 35 passes for 259 yards and a touchdown while adding another 34 yards and a rushing score on the ground. Despite the Saints ultimately falling 19-17, Shough looked far more comfortable against the same defense that had given him fits earlier in the season. And that's without many starters around him. Of the 19 Saints players who took a snap on offense in the 2025 season finale, just seven remain. Only two of them (Juwan Johnson and Kevin Austin Jr.) caught a pass from Shough.
Now, he gets another opportunity to face Atlanta, this time on Monday Night Football. The Falcons have already seen both sides of Shough. They've seen the young quarterback struggle to find answers against their defense, but they've also seen him come back months later and put together a much more competitive performance. That's what makes tonight's matchup so intriguing. For Shough, this is another chance to show how much he's grown since that first meeting. The Week 12 loss is still part of his story against Atlanta, but so is the way he responded in Week 18. And what better stage to take that next step than Monday Night Football, on the anniversary of the Domecoming?
Nearly a year after Atlanta first stalled his momentum, Shough has another chance to turn the page and show that he's no longer the same quarterback the Falcons saw the first time around.
