Good luck on your new venture, Blake Grupe. The former New Orleans Saints kicker was cut by the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday but didn't last long -- the New York Jets claimed him off of waivers. The Jets owned the second pick in waiver claim priority and acted fast to get him.
So much for playing meaningful football. Grupe didn't exactly leave New Orleans on a high note by expressing how eager he was to kick for a Colts team that seemed bound for the playoffs, rather than what was a near-winless Saints squad, but now he's joining one of the few teams with a longer playoff drought than the black and gold. New Orleans hasn't played in the postseason in five years. New York has gone 15 years without qualifying for the playoffs.
What about the Saints'
own kicking situation? Daniel Carlson won the job in less than a week, and while the Saints released both of their training camp competitors -- Tanner Brown and Charlie Smyth -- it may not be the last we've seen of them. The team intends to re-sign Smyth to their practice squad and take advantage of the International Pathway Program (IPP) exemption he carries as an Irish player, assuming he doesn't take his talents elsewhere.
