After a disappointing loss to the Minnesota Vikings, the New Orleans Saints have dropped to 1-4 and are desperately searching for answers. The offense managed just 142 total yards, struggled to convert on third down, and lost the time of possession battle by nearly 20 minutes. It was another frustrating performance for a team that can't seem to find any consistency on either side of the ball. Despite a few standout individual performances, there weren't many positives to take away from Week 5. Here's a look at the Saints' stock up and stock down following another tough loss.
Stock Up: EDGE Chase Young
Chase Young has arguably been the best player on the Saints' defense dating back to last season. His relentless effort off the edge has been a major asset for this team,
and there's a noticeable difference when he's not on the field. Facing a tough matchup against Kyler Murray and the Vikings, Young continued to make his presence felt, helping generate multiple sacks alongside fellow defensive end Carl Granderson. Young remains one of the few consistent bright spots on a defense that needs more players to step up.
Stock Up: RB Kendre Miller
After some extremely poor outings over the past few weeks, Kendre Miller looked much more like himself in this one. Although his overall production didn't necessarily jump off the stat sheet, he ran with authority and purpose, showing great acceleration through the hole and the ability to fight through contact. His lone touchdown was the Saints' only offensive score of the day, providing one of the few positives in an otherwise miserable performance. If Miller can build on this showing, the Saints could have a more reliable option in the backfield moving forward.
Stock Up: S Jonas Sanker
Jonas Sanker put together a tremendous performance after some difficult outings earlier in the season. He finished with seven total tackles and recovered a fumble that he returned for a touchdown at a critical moment to tie the game. Sanker played physically throughout the afternoon and did a good job closing on plays in the short-to-intermediate passing game. His impact went beyond the stat sheet, and the young safety showed the kind of playmaking ability the Saints need more of as they look to turn things around.
Stock Down: Saints Offense
The Saints' offense struggled mightily, showing little ability to counter Brian Flores' aggressive defensive scheme. Finishing with just 142 total yards and converting only two of 10 third-down opportunities, New Orleans consistently failed to sustain drives or put itself in scoring position. The offense couldn't find a rhythm, and the lack of production put enormous pressure on the defense to keep the game within reach. It's difficult to win games when the offense provides so few answers, and this performance highlighted just how much work remains.
Stock Down: Third-Down Defense
The Saints' defense had its own struggles, particularly on third down. Kyler Murray repeatedly found running lanes up the middle and used his mobility to extend plays and pick up crucial first downs. Those conversions allowed Minnesota to sustain drives, control the clock, and keep the Saints' defense on the field for extended stretches. Against a mobile quarterback like Murray, New Orleans needed to do a better job maintaining its rush lanes, containing the pocket, and getting off the field. Instead, the Vikings consistently found ways to move the chains.
Stock Down: Kellen Moore
Kellen Moore and the Saints' offensive staff had few answers for Brian Flores' aggressive defensive game plan. Minnesota consistently applied pressure, disrupting the timing of the passing game and making life difficult for quarterback Tyler Shough. Allowing Shough to operate in obvious passing situations against frequent blitz pressure was a recipe for disaster, especially when the offense struggled to establish any consistency.
Moore needed to find ways to counter the pressure with quicker throws, screens, misdirection, and a more effective commitment to the running game. Instead, the Saints struggled to sustain drives and finished with just 142 total yards. While the offensive struggles can't fall entirely on Moore, the lack of adjustments was concerning. After another disappointing performance, the Saints need their offensive coordinator to find answers quickly before the season slips even further away.
The Bottom Line
At 1-4, the Saints have very little room for error. Individual performances from Young, Miller, and Sanker provided a few positives, but they were overshadowed by an offense that couldn't move the ball and a defense that struggled to get off the field on third down. New Orleans needs more consistency on both sides of the ball, and the coaching staff must find ways to address these issues before they become the defining story of the season.
