Ryan Wright has already completed a pass involving the New Orleans Saints. The only issue? He was playing against them when it happened. You can see it for yourself right here.
Wright completed a fake-punt pass against the Saints while playing for the Minnesota Vikings at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. It remains the former high school quarterback's only NFL completion. Now, Wright said on Monday that he hopes to make a similar play
for his new team.“It was a really cool play, very cool experience,” Wright said. “My first NFL completion, and it happened to be in London, too.”
The irony is not lost on Wright now that he is wearing a Saints uniform. After appearing in 68 regular-season games over four seasons with Minnesota, Wright signed
a four-year, $14 million contract with New Orleans this offseason.
“Now looking back, I’m on the Saints now, and now it’s like, ‘Shoot, why did I do that?’” Wright continued. “Hopefully I can bring that same element to the Saints, and we can complete some more passes.”
Wright was a high school quarterback and a highly touted punter. His quarterback hopes changed when Tulane needed a punter, giving the California native a more defined path that eventually led him to the NFL. Now 26, Wright has developed into an experienced directional punter. His quarterback background also gives the Saints another option when designing special teams plays. He has attempted two NFL passes, completing one and leaving him with a 50 percent career completion rate. Wright said the Saints have already emphasized studying unusual circumstances so players can be ready when they come up during games.
“We just go over so many situations that randomly pop up in the league on a daily basis. We’re trying to be the smartest team out there, so when we get out there, we can just play fast,” Wright added.
Wright’s first NFL completion came against the Saints. Now, he hopes his next opportunity arises while he’s helping them, and he should have four years to make that a reality. It adds another element for opponents to focus on as they prepare to face the 2026 Saints.
