There's an embarrassing trend developing for New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis. Several coaches he passed over in recent searches for Sean Payton's successor have led their teams to big wins at the Caesars Superdome -- Loomis interviewed Brian Flores for the opening back in 2022, but chose to promote Dennis Allen instead. On Sunday, the Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator embarrassed Saints head coach Kellen Moore, holding the New Orleans offense to just 142 yards and seven points.
But it wasn't just Flores getting some payback against the team that told him thanks-but-no-thanks. Just a few weeks ago we saw Klint Kubiak lead the Las Vegas Raiders into a furious second-half comeback to knock out the Saints on their home field.
Kubiak did the best he could with a bad roster back in 2024 as the Saints' offensive coordinator, but he was allowed to leave in a lateral move while Loomis hired Moore. Kubiak won a Super Bowl as the Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator and already has the Raiders showing results after years of mismanagement.
And we may not be out of the woods yet. Mike McCarthy assumed he would be one of their top choices for the job in 2025, after the Saints fired Allen, but the team never even interviewed him before hiring his old assistant Kellen Moore. He sat out the 2025 season and was hired by the Pittsburgh Steelers. After playing the New York Giants this weekend, the Saints will travel to Paris for an NFL International Series game with McCarthy and the Steelers. You can bet McCarthy will want a win. With coaches he shut the door on getting wins against his team, you have to wonder if Loomis is second-guessing his decisions.
