Our countdown to the New Orleans Saints' season opener has reached Day 34, and this 34-yard touchdown pass from Drew Brees to Kenny Stills is our pick for the Saints Play of the Day. Brees was facing third down with 20 yards to go late in the fourth quarter, but in for a penny, in for a pound -- so he flung a pass 34 yards downfield and over the outstretched arms of two New England Patriots defenders. With Stills leaping high to secure the catch for six points, the Saints had a shot at upsetting Tom Brady inside his own home stadium. That gave New Orleans a narrow lead, which they extended with a Garrett Hartley field goal a few minutes later. See it for yourself right here.
But Brady won the day on a touchdown pass of his own, only with a big
assist from the officials. Patriots left tackle Nate Solder got away with a flagrant holding foul on Saints defensive end Junior Galette, hooking his arm around Galette's neck and driving the defender to his knees to give Brady a clear throwing lane. It was a frustrating end to a great game, but we wouldn't have even gotten here if not for Brees threading that needle to Stills.
