On Wednesday morning, NFL insider Jordan Schultz was the first to report that the Minnesota Vikings are signing wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. The New Orleans Saints will host the Vikings in a Week 5 matchup on Sunday afternoon. Schultz reports that Beckham will initially be added to the Minnesota practice squad.
An 11-year NFL veteran, the 33-year-old Beckham played the first three games of this season with the New York Giants before being released on September 29. He had no catches and just one target in 20 offensive snaps. Over his career, Beckham has 575 receptions for 7,987 yards and 59 touchdowns. He's made three Pro Bowls and has five 1,000-yard seasons, with the last coming in 2019 with the Cleveland Browns.
Odell Beckham Jr. was born
in Baton Rouge and went to high school at Isidore Newman in New Orleans. After starring with the LSU Tigers, earning 1st Team All-American honors in 2013, Beckham was the 12th choice in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Giants. He played five seasons in New York through 2018 and was with the Browns, Rams, Ravens, and Dolphins before rejoining the Giants this past offseason.
Beckham isn't the only player with New Orleans ties that the Saints could face on Sunday. Star Vikings wideout Justin Jefferson attended Destrehan High School in Louisiana and also starred with the LSU Tigers. Jefferson is dealing with an ankle injury, which may have prompted the Beckham signing. Additionally, former Saints running backs Devin Neal and Audric Estime are currently on the Vikings practice squad.
