Fourth-year referee Alan Eck has been assigned to the New Orleans Saints' season-opening road game with the Detroit Lions in Week 1, per Football Zebras. Eck worked for several years as a side judge and umpire before being promoted to referee in 2023. According to NFLPenalties.com, is crew threw the 2nd-fewest penalty flags per game last year (13.1), with an emphasis on false starts (36) and offensive holding fouls (34). Eck's crew also doesn't tolerate unnecessary roughness; they penalized teams for it 12 times, tied for 7th-most out of 17 crews in 2025.
But the Saints are 2-3 in games Eck has refereed, while the Lions are 2-1. That doesn't mean he and his crew are biased towards Detroit. New Orleans is 20-31 (.392) in that span while the Lions are 36-15
(.705). Detroit has just fielded better teams over the last three years. Now is as good a time as any to prove the Saints are ready for prime time, just like the Lions themselves.
What's concerning is the home-and-away splits. The Lions are 18-7 since 2023 when defending their home turf at Ford Field, while the Saints are 9-17. Eck's crew focusing on procedural fouls is a problem for a team entering a hostile environment on the road. Last year, his away teams were penalized 5.7 times per game (7th-most), while home teams drew just 5.1 penalties each week (3rd-fewest). If the Saints come out of the gates sloppy and disorganized like they did last year, tying for the second-most false starts (30), Eck and his crew will punish them for it.
