This is interesting. The Jacksonville Jaguars got a good look at Spencer Rattler during their joint practice with the New Orleans Saints and the preseason game that followed -- which convinced them to ask about trading for him, per NewOrleans.Football's Nick Underhill. Underhill added that "The feeling was the Saints were not interested in trading."
Instead, the Jaguars pivoted to a trade with the Miami Dolphins targeting former Texas Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers; the deal brought Miami a 2028 sixth-round draft pick for the backup, who was a seventh rounder in 2025. It was initially reported to be a swap of late-round picks in 2028, but that no longer appears to have been the case.
If that's the best compensation Jacksonville offered for
Rattler, the Saints were right to say no. They shouldn't trade him for anything worse than what they spent to acquire him: a fifth-round draft choice. If that seems like a hard sell when other backup quarterbacks are being dealt for sixth rounders, so be it. He's worth more as an experience backup who has started games in Kellen Moore's system than, say, the 191st pick (where the Jaguars drafted in 2026's sixth round) in a draft two years from now. Expect Rattler to back up Tyler Shough this season unless another team presents a better offer.
