Spencer Rattler won't be traded to the New York Giants after all. On Monday, the Giants acquired Minnesota Vikings draft bust J.J. McCarthy in a trade for a fifth-round pick, giving the former first rounder a fresh start on a team that needs new life at quarterback. Jaxson Dart is likely done for the season with a knee injury and Jameis Winston didn't inspire confidence in relief duty over the weekend. It also means the Giants are waiving former New Orleans Saints fourth-round pick Jake Haener, per NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.
Haener, 27, was an entertaining college quarterback at Fresno State but hasn't carried over that knack for making plays to the NFL. The Saints pulled him at halftime of his lone start after trading up to draft him, and
he has since bounced around the league on various practice squads after Tyler Shough asserted himself on top of the depth chart in New Orleans. But this isn't the line for him in New York. Assuming he clears waivers, Garafolo adds that the Giants plan on re-signing him to their practice squad as an emergency option on the third string. Haener will stick around and see if another opportunity emerges for him.
