Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver has his hands full preparing to slow down the NFL's leading passer, and he knows it. He shared his take on the challenges New Orleans Saints quarterback Tyler Shough presents, and from one point of view it certainly reads like a backhanded compliment.
Weaver described Shough as a "poor man's Josh Allen," via The Baltimore Banner's Jonas Shaffer, pointing to the quarterbacks' arm strength and mobility inside and outside the pocket. He's seen Shough go to work firsthand. Last year, Weaver was the defensive coordinator for a Miami Dolphins team that gave up 239 yards and two touchdown passes to Shough, with a third score slipping through Chris Olave's hands inside the final minute. to get away with a win.
It's easy to read Weaver's comment as a slight towards Shough; no one ever wants to be described as the "poor man's" version of anything. If fans want bulletin board material, it's there. At the same time, Shough has shown some of the same qualities that have made Allen such a success story with the Buffalo Bills. If he keeps it up and plays his cards right he'll be right there with Allen among the game's highest-paid quarterbacks some day. Upsetting the Ravens this Sunday would be a great chapter in his own story.
