Here's confirmation on which Cleveland Browns quarterback the New Orleans Saints defense will compete against on Sunday. While Deshaun Watson returned to practice on Friday after missing two practices with concussion symptoms, Browns head coach Todd Monken told reporters that second-year quarterback Shedeur Sanders will start. He was noncommittal on Watson's game status. Watson still needs to clear concussion protocol before he can even serve as the backup.
While Sanders has expressed confidence in his matchup with the struggling Saints defense, he hasn't had much success as a starter in the NFL. Last year the Browns went 3-4 in games Sanders started with the quarterback at fault on more turnovers (10 interceptions, two fumbles) than touchdowns
scored (seven passing, one rushing). He averaged fewer passing yards per game (175) than the New Orleans defense has allowed this season (233).
So we'll see if Sanders can turn up the heat after the Browns invested a lot of resources in their wide receiver corps this season. The Saints have had two weeks to get ready for this game and the challenges ahead in the back half of their season. If the Browns run over them like too many other teams have, it's going to be a slog through the next ten games.
