Ouch. New Orleans Saints linebacker Danny Stutsman is taking a big hit to his wallet for a roughing the passer penalty in last week's game, per Nick Underhill for NewOrleans.Football
. Underhill reports that Stutsman is being fined for $7,011 after delivering a late hit on Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Kirk Cousins. Stutsman is earning about $55,833 per week on his rookie contract, so that's a significant loss for him.Stutsman was penalized at the time, costing the Saints a stop on third down and setting up Las Vegas for a go-ahead touchdown pass. The foul was criticized on social media as an example of rules changes designed to protect quarterbacks going too far; Stutsman had his head up and arms around Cousins in a textbook tackle, but landed
with his body weight falling on the passer.
That's become a point of emphasis by officiating crews in recent years, so maybe this could be a learning moment for the second-year linebacker. It looks like these defenders will just have to learn how to break the laws of physics to keep these things from happening in the future.
