It looks like Gayle Benson has reversed course after calling out her team’s leaders for the New Orleans Saints’ poor performance. Benson had uncharacteristically strong words for general manager Mickey Loomis and head coach Kellen Moore after the Saints started the season at 1-4, but now they’ve limped into the bye week at 2-5, she seems to brushing it off.
Benson addressed Saints fans in a letter through the team’s official website
:Dear Friends,
What an extraordinary and memorable week in Paris! As we return home, I want to express my heartfelt appreciation to each of you who traveled to France to be part of this historic Saints game. Your presence made the occasion even more meaningful to me and our entire organization.
I know this journey required
an enormous amount of time, planning and commitment. Whether you joined us as a devoted fan, corporate partner, business leader, community advocate, or elected official, I am deeply grateful that you chose to share this special experience with us.
While the outcome on the field was not what we had hoped for, we have much to be proud of from our time together. We represented the New Orleans Saints, our beloved city and the entire state of Louisiana with class and pride on an international stage. Everywhere we went, you shared the warmth, hospitality and passion that make our community so special.
The week also offered valuable opportunities to strengthen the ties between Louisiana and France. Conversations among government officials, business leaders and cultural organizations opened many doors for business development, investment, tourism and cultural exchange. I look forward to seeing these relationships grow and bring lasting benefits to both our city and state.
No wonder Moore and Loomis have appeared so unconcerned and easygoing when speaking with the media. Between visiting practice to hug Moore in a show of support and this letter, Benson has done everything she could since delivering those surprisingly critical remarks at the Greater New Orleans QB Club to make it seem like her words were mischaracterized.
Of course she feels like the Paris trip was a success. She got to meet with international politicians and other billionaires while hosting guests for a high-profile party the night before the game. The matchup itself went off without a hitch, making her a lot of money in the process. What does it matter who wins and loses at that point? Never mind the thousands of Saints fans who traveled around the world to support the team their tax dollars subsidize. If Benson isn’t going to demand a competitive product, the least she could do is show she cares.

We have seen before that Benson’s patience will eventually run out. She fired head coaches during the season like Dennis Allen and Willie Green (with the Pelicans), but she gave them both too much time to begin with. With Moore failing to develop his team or practice accountability for himself, his players and coaches, you’ve got to wonder how long she’ll make fans wait before finally making a move.
