quarterback Jaxson Dart is going to be out for "an extended period of time" according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport, having suffered a serious knee injury in Monday night's loss to the Los Angeles Rams. It was initially believed Dart only had an MCL sprain after being sandwiched between a couple of Rams defenders, but an MRI found more extensive damage that could land him on season-ending injured reserve.That means Dart won't be in the lineup when the New Orleans Saints visit New York in Week 6. Dart and Tyler Shough have been compared against one another ever since they were drafted; the Giants traded up from No. 34 to the No. 25 pick so they could select Dart, while the Saints chose Shough at No. 40.
Shough won the fan-voted Pepsi Zero Sugar Rookie of the Year award and finished ahead of him in Associated Press ballots for Offensive Rookie of the Year, too. That didn't stop New York-area sports radio hosts like WFAN's Tommy Lugauer from pushing the rivalry between the two quarterbacks. Dart did lose to the Saints when his team visited New Orleans last season but Spencer Rattler was still starting at quarterback in that game. They have yet to cross paths.
Here's to a speedy recovery for Dart, who is one of the most exciting young quarterbacks in the game when healthy. Instead, it'll be former Saints quarterback Jameis Winston leading the Giants out of the tunnel when the Saints come to town in a few weeks. Winston signed a two-year contract extension earlier in September and is himself backed up by practice squad QB Jake Haener, who New Orleans drafted back in 2023. As for the Saints? This is a brutal reminder of how important it is to protect their own franchise quarterback. But keeping Shough clean will be tougher without Kelvin Banks Jr. at left tackle.
