Colby Covington is happy to see Tony Ferguson get his first combat sports win in over six years, but that doesn’t mean he should continue fighting.
Ferguson picked up a third-round TKO win over Salt Papi at Misfits Boxing 22 this past Saturday. After losing the first two rounds, Ferguson landed a flurry of punches on Papi, who looked to be properly defending himself, before the referee stepped in and stopped the fight.
Now that Ferguson has gotten his hand raised again, Covington feels he should now
call it a career on a victory,
“Happy for him,” Covington said on his YouTube channel. “Super congratulations to Tony for actually winning a fight. Even though it was against some influencer that has no combat sports experience, a win’s a win.
“My advice to Tony is quit while you’re ahead and ride off into the sunset. Go enjoy time with your family, brother. If you get back in there again, you’re going to get hurt, and no one wants to see you get hurt, Tony, because we like you. No more hits to the head, and no more reason to give Duck-Lip [Justin] Gaethje a run for his money for King of CTE.”
Ferguson snapped an eight-fight losing streak, which included losses to Justin Gaethje, Charles Oliveira, Paddy Pimblett, Michael Chandler, and Nate Diaz. The former interim lightweight champ’s most recent win prior to this past Saturday was a doctor’s stoppage TKO win over Donald Cerrone at UFC 238 in June 2019.
Covington and Ferguson have had a weird relationship — including a wacky back-and-forth at the UFC 296 pre-fight press conference where both were verbally at each other’s throats, then being buddies on Team America 45 seconds later.
“I think we’re friends, I don’t know it went so many different ways,” Covington said. “We were friends, we were enemies, we were friends, and then we were enemies again. But Team USA, brother.”
