The build-up…
It’s the final leg of our tour of the US, and from our side of the pond, it’s looked brilliant!
The release of the kits, the events that the club has put on for the travelling fans and the interaction between players –
past & present – and fans has been great. Although it’s way down on the pecking order, a win would go down nicely to help things along.
It’s our final leg on our US tour, before we return and face our final two fixtures in pre-season, which Le Bris has already stated will be used to field players in the shape he intends to use them as the season begins. So expect more of the same in terms of half-time rotation and as many players as possible getting as many minutes on the pitch as the manager and his staff feel is beneficial.
So far, we’ve helped showcase the Premier League by taking on Liverpool and Leeds United, and today we go full Hollywood as we line up against Wrexham – more specifically Phil Parkinson’s Wrexham.
By adding that detail, it’s not a hint that I particularly dislike the fella or anything like that; he just reminds me of the position we were in. Unless anything crazy happens in the future, I doubt he will manage a bigger club than ourselves, and anyone in his position would have had a go at it, but it was always too big for him.
On the other hand, it reminds me of how far we’ve come. Not too long ago we looked to people like Parkinson to get us out of the mess we were in, and his last game in charge of Sunderland was just under six years ago – we now have the fourth longest-serving manager in the Premier League, with Le Bris being here for two years.
Our history against today’s opponents isn’t that extensive; we have to go back to 1980 since we last played them in any sort of fixture, and we’ve only met six times in total, with today being the first time we meet in a non-competitive game.
