Spain’s Referees’ Union has filed formal complaints against Real Madrid, president Florentino Pérez and the club’s official television network, accusing them of waging a systematic campaign of harassment that endangers officials.
According to AESAF, the relentless, critical coverage broadcast by Real Madrid TV, combined with aggressive public statements from Pérez, has crossed the line from sporting critique into systemic intimidation. The union warns that the club’s media strategy is creating a toxic
atmosphere that could ultimately incite real-world hostility or physical violence against match officials.
“The continuous broadcast of content that systematically questions and discredits the refereeing collective deteriorates the climate of respect necessary for sports to take place,” the union said in a statement. AESAF added that its legal action was aimed at protecting “the dignity, integrity, and safety” of Spanish referees so they can work in an environment free of targeted hostility.
For over a year, Real Madrid TV has drawn fierce criticism from rival teams and league officials for broadcasting highly produced, critical videos dissecting the alleged past errors of referees assigned to upcoming Real Madrid matches.
While Real Madrid has historically maintained that it is merely exercising its right to free speech and highlighting legitimate flaws in Spanish officiating, the referees’ union is now signaling that it will no longer tolerate the pressure.
