It was certainly one of the more bizarre matches of the Bundesliga season thus far, but Bayern Munich battled back twice to finish 2-2 at the WWK Arena against FC Augsburg in the first match back after the international break. Manuel Neuer’s mistake just seconds into the match gifted Robin Fellhauer the fastest goal in Bundesliga history. This early blunder set a gritty tone for the match against an Augsburg side that has been highly impressive under Manuel Baum this season.
Unusually, Bayern also
had three goals ruled out for offside decisions in the second half. Luis Díaz was denied twice by VAR – one on either side of Ismael Saibari’s 55th minute goal that stood and made it 1-1. After Rodrigo Ribeiro scored against the run of play to make it 2-1 to Augsburg, Nathaniel Brown made his presence felt off the bench, slotting home to make it 2-2 after he was teed up by Harry Kane from close range. In stoppage time, Serge Gnabry, who hit the woodwork multiple times in his 23-minute appearance off the bench, appeared to have scored a dramatic winner for Bayern, but was ruled to be offside in the buildup.
Despite Bayern’s dominance in the second half, they were unable to make the most of the 10 chances they registered on target from their 27 shots overall and inches either way could have been the difference between one point and three. Kane came very close right before halftime, Gnabry hit the post in the 83rd minute before his disallowed goal, and Finn Dahmen made a number of key saves to help earn his side a hard-fought point against the German Rekordmeister.
Personally, despite not finding the back of the net, it was another solid performance from Kane, having been the provider for both of Bayern’s goals. He was officially voted man of the match via the official Bundesliga app, having received 31% of the voting over Fellhauer’s 24%, Saibari’s 19, and Brown’s 16% (via @iMiaSanMia). His brace of assists takes him to four assists this season across all competitions, three of which have come in the Bundesliga.
There’s now only been two Bundesliga matches Kane has not had a goal contribution in, which are the only two matches where that stat applied, not counting the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup. He was coming off of scoring in four straight matches for England during the international break, but will now have to wait until the midweek Champions League clash against Viking to get back on the score sheet for Bayern.
