Things have not been great for Leroy Sané since leaving Bayern Munich. He has mostly fallen out of favor, among the German fans. None of his performances with his current club Galatasaray and the German national team have been particularly good. Manager Julian Nagelsmann may continue to favor the winger and call him up year in and year out, but his performances have not been received well.
Yet again, Sané becomes subject to criticism. In the friendly against the USMNT, the attacker started, but put
up a less than satisfactory performance. Lothas Matthäus, with Sky Germany, addressed his game. However, the Bayern legend was more lenient than usual with his review — “The time change, the weather—it’s impossible to get into a rhythm after just three or four days,” he said.
He promptly then got to the crux of the issue — Sané was making “too many mistakes in the build-up.”
The 30-year-old only had one major chance. He had set up Felix Nmecha to score in the 48th, but the chance was missed. Right after, Sané took a free kick that went over the goal post. “That fits his game,” Matthäus reacted sharply. He then softened his stance — “but maybe he’ll still find his form.”
This kind of lenience is not very characteristic of Matthäus — but perhaps he’s holding himself back so as to not affect Sané mentally ahead of a huge tournament like the World Cup.
