In New York, McCarthy will get more spread looks and RPOs from the gun. Does he have the poise, field vision and accuracy to create explosive plays in that passing game?I’m dubious … but I am interested. mover who should be involved in the option running game, though he needs to protect himself from hits, as he has collected far too many knocks over his short time in the league. I can see Matt Nagy and Greg Roman, the two primary offensive designers in New York, coming up with good, risk-averse game plans that dramatically lower McCarthy’s time to throw (3.22 seconds last season, 14th longest for a QB since 2010) and minimize his opportunities for post-snap decisions.

A bevy of injuries prevented him from staying on the field enough to develop further. Wonky footwork didn’t allow him to pass the ball with enough accuracy to move the Vikings offense. Off the field, his day-to-day habits, even inside the Vikings’ building, made it difficult for the staff to know what type of mindset they’d be coaching each week.
Even though McCarthy played in a pro-style system at Michigan, he often seemed more comfortable flowing out of the pocket. The Vikings worked hard to ingrain him within their complex rhythm-and-timing-based system. During the back half of last season, McCarthy found success, saying that he stopped fixating on the fundamentals and processes and played free. Maybe Giants offensive coordinator Matt Nagy’s offense, which contains some simpler RPO-style concepts that were a part of the game plan with Dart, will allow McCarthy to think less and let his athleticism take over.

Make no mistake, this is Dart’s team. The Giants love him and his potential. Even Harbaugh, who wasn’t around when the Giants traded back into the first round to get him in 2025, fell in love with Dart quickly. He made it clear that Dart was a big selling point when he took the Giants job. There are almost no scenarios where he doesn’t enter camp with his old starting job.
Once McCarthy is up to speed on the playbook, probably in a couple of weeks, Winston will have to watch his back. His hold on the job could very much be week-to-week. Some of that is because of how one team source described the Giants’ interest in McCarthy: “He’s just a better fit for what we want to do. He’s athletic. He’s much more like Dart than Winston is. He may not be better, but he’s a better fit.”

Schoen and Harbaugh could easily stick to their guns. Ride through with Winston no matter what. McCarthy seems to be an admission that they misvalued Winston’s worth. If they didn’t trust Jake Haener, elevated from the practice squad, as a backup, there were options in free agency (Jimmy Garoppolo) or practice squads (Josh Johnson) who were more than capable of riding out a game.
This aggression for McCarthy (the Vikings would not accept a sixth-round pick in compensation) is a two-fold covering: Both if Winston goes down, or if they’ve seen enough of the 32-year-old and believe they need a switch. The expectation, talking to league sources, is that the Giants do not give up a fifth-round pick unless they plan to play McCarthy in the near future.

Arvell Reese has been nominated for Pepsi Rookie of the Week following the Giants’ 12-7 victory over the Titans in Week 3. The linebacker was everywhere against Tennessee as he finished with a game-high 13 tackles (10 solo), including one tackle for loss, and a pass defensed.
The rookie linebacker also performed well in coverage, according to Pro Football Focus. Reese surrendered just three receptions for 14 yards against the Titans, which earned him a passer rating against of just 79.2. In addition to his dominant performance on defense, Reese also made an open-field tackle on Jordan Stout’s 74-yard punt.

Veteran pass rusher Yannick Ngakoue has attempted to put himself on the New York Giants’ radar days after Brian Burns suffered a season-ending torn ACL in Sunday’s win over the Tennessee Titans.
When a Giants fan suggested the team call the free agent and loop in head coach John Harbaugh, Ngakoue answered with three words: Willing and able. After another fan asked whether he and Harbaugh were on good enough terms to make the call, Ngakoue wrote that “coach is my guy.”
