During an interview with Leo Vegas (as made exclusively available to Bavarian Football Works), Steffen Freund does not think it is out of the realm of possibility for Harry Kane to extend his stay at Bayern
Munich.
“The good news for Bayern is that Harry is a grounded person. He loves Bayern Munich. He loves everything — being there with his family — and to change again, to Barcelona, where’s the difference? It’s not a big difference anymore. I think the move from Spurs to Bayern was more understandable — to win silverware, to go to another country, and gain experience in a different mentality, a different way to win trophies. So that step is already done,” Freund told Leo Vegas. “Now, it’s about money because Harry is so good that Barcelona — of course — have to be linked with him if Robert Lewandowski moves on. He’s a little older than Harry, and they did the same with Lewandowski.
“People were saying, ‘Oh my goodness, he’s not young anymore. He’ll move to Barcelona’ But he still played outstanding. Now, the injuries are starting to come. It’s not easy, of course. At that age, it’s not easy to score goals. So, Harry will be linked with every big club. But for him, I don’t think it’s a massive step anymore — whether it’s to go to Barcelona or stay at Bayern Munich. That’s my view. Bayern Munich — they’ll always try to sign top-class players. I’m sure, if they’re clever, they’ll ask Harry for his opinion.
“For example, if there’s an option to sign a new striker or a fantastic talent from the Premier League, Harry will do the job for Bayern and he’ll be happy to have another fantastic footballer there with him. So overall — everything is possible.”
The only potential pitfall for a contract extension could be another club looking to pay Kane a lot more money.
“The good news for Bayern is that I’m sure Harry doesn’t have to leave. He has enough money. He has a fantastic family. And if you know the lifestyle in Munich — especially at the moment with Oktoberfest — you enjoy it, you stick together, you party a little bit. It’s a fantastic lifestyle in Munich so there’s no reason, if you ask me, for him to leave. Only the money,” said Freund. “For Harry — I would understand — if he makes the decision: ‘I can earn not 20 million, but 40 million a year,’ then you have to understand. But I think Bayern can’t pay that right now. Financially, I think they’re not as strong as Barcelona.”
Bayern Munich coasted into this international break with a 3-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt and immediately (and rightfully) hit Oktoberfest before the squad breaks up for a week-and-a-half for another international break.
It feels like a good time to appreciate these good times and examine why it all has come together under Vincent Kompany so far this season. This is what we have on tap for this episode of the Bavarian Podcast Works Show:
- Winning — and some personnel moves — have cured all at Bayern Munich. The winning formula is more complicated than that, but let’s explore why things are going so well and how to keep them moving in that direction.
- Some Bayern players need a break. It is a new world for several player and a tough adjustment, but it could be the difference between winning the Champions League and flaming out early.
- What’s wrong with Florian Wirtz? The former Bayern Munich transfer target got benched at Liverpool, proving again that fit is sometime more important than finances in a footballer’s career.
- Manuel Neuer to get a new deal? Bayern Munich might just be kicking it around.
