It’s getting really hard not to be optimistic about the future for the Silver and Black, especially since the Spurs are one of three teams left in the league that are undefeated in preseason. It’s useful to remember that these games don’t count, and neither the Spurs or their opponents are putting out the best possible teams to win the games, instead they are mostly focused on developing and evaluating players and getting in some coaching before the grind of the NBA season, where it’s really hard to do any extended practicing with travel and games every few days. Mitch Johnson played his starters for a little more than 3 quarters in the first game against the Pacers, with the Spurs winning 124-108 in Indianapolis, padding their lead after both coaches went to their benches late in the game.
It will be interesting to see if Coach Johnson once again plays his starters extended minutes, or lets the deep bench get significant minutes as they try to earn a spot or rotation minutes in the upcoming season. It’s really Mitch Johnson’s first season where he’s had the opportunity to run the team his way, so I think we’ll find out a little bit about his management style in tonight’s game. My guess is that the starters play the first half, and it’s going to be Summer League in October for the entire second half. But you know you’re going to watch it all, because you never know when some player is going to make a spectacular play that you don’t want to miss.
I’ll be writing a recap of the game which should go up shortly after the game ends, so be sure to join that thread after the game to share your observations and reactions. The regular season is just a few days away, so it’s going to get real here pretty soon.
Game Prediction:
At the conclusion of the game, Adam Silver will join the Spurs in the locker room to present them with the preseason championship trophy, which will be fashioned completely from iron pyrite, otherwise known as Fool’s Gold. In pure Spurs fashion, they will reject the trophy and kick Silver out of the locker room.
