Liverpool have today completed the signing of Rennes 20-year-old centre half Jeremy Jacquet, but the highly talented France youth international won’t be able to help with the club’s current defensive depth
crisis as the club have agreed to loan the player straight back to the Ligue 1 side for the remainder of the season.
The widely reported deal sees Liverpool pay £55M up front plus £5M in add-ons that could take the deal to £60M when everything’s said and done. Rennes was only willing to sign off on a transfer if the player remained at the club this season, while Liverpool were eager to see off interest from Chelsea and Manchester United.
Jacquet flew to Liverpool earlier today to undergo his medical and having completed it is now on his way back to France. With a contract running through 2029 and with multiple Premier League sides interested, Rennes had a strong negotiating position, but the player’s preference helped ensure the Reds came out on top.
The centre half, who has logged 19 appearances totalling 1,694 minutes so far this season has regularly played in a back three, which will inevitably lead to speculation about a switch to a three at the back system next season despite that Liverpool ruled out Rubin Amorim as a coaching candidate on the basis of such.
