Bayern Munich have had some of the world’s best players in their ranks over the deep history of the club. However, this century of football has been dominated by the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi when it comes to individual awards. While both of those players have slowed down and opened the door for new players to receive the world’s biggest individual award, it still hasn’t happened for a Bayern Munich star in the 21st century.
Most notably, Robert Lewandowski never won the Ballon d’Or
during his time with Bayern, despite several years where he was the clear deserving candidate of the prize. Franck Ribery, Manuel Neuer, and others were at the top of their powers during their time at the club, and never won either. However, this year could be the year that a Bayern Munich player finally receives their flowers. While Michael Olisé remains a top candidate for the Ballon d’Or, Harry Kane is the likely favorite to win the award this year.
Bayern’s chief marketing officer Rouven Kasper says it would be very important for FC Bayern as a brand if Harry Kane were to win the Ballon d’Or: “From a brand perspective [it would give us] a different kind of position. Being a platform for a Ballon d’Or winner is something which counts more than statistics. If you have a player like this, it would be a big honour as well for the club. And for sure it would also push our activities globally. It is a strong sign for others,” Rouven Kasper told @SkySports, as captured by @iMiaSanMia.
While not everyone puts as much value in these sort of awards, especially when stories come out about journalists not voting for a particular player because their pace attribute in a video game isn’t high enough. However, it is undeniable that these individual awards to hold weight in PR and are important for both the club as well as the players.
It is know seen that players from a club in Germany aren’t able to win the Ballon d’Or, as seen with the robbery against Lewandowski, but Kane winning this year would certainly change that conversation. Here’s hoping for you Harry!
