Jonathan Tah’s decision to join Bayern Munich last summer was about more than simply signing for one of Europe’s biggest clubs. It was also about working with Vincent Kompany.
Speaking about his first year under the Bayern boss, Tah explained that one of his priorities when making the move was finding a coach who could continue pushing him to improve—and he believes Kompany has done exactly that.
“When I arrived, I said it was important for me to feel that I had a coach who could help me improve –
someone who could take me to the next level, because I know I haven’t reached where I want to be yet. He’s done exactly that through the way he communicates, the way he leads, and the example he sets as both a leader and a coach. Having been a player himself, he’s able to explain things from a player’s perspective, which makes a real difference. Then there are also the defensive aspects of the game that he places particular emphasis on, and I’ve learned an incredible amount from that as well,” Tah said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
It’s a strong endorsement of Kompany’s impact behind the scenes. While the Belgian has earned praise for his leadership and tactical approach, Tah emphasized the value of having a coach who understands the game from a player’s perspective. Kompany’s own career as one of Europe’s top defenders allows him to communicate defensive concepts in a way that resonates with his players.
Tah also made it clear that, despite already being regarded as one of Germany’s top center-backs, he never felt he had reached his ceiling. His goal in joining Bayern was to continue developing, and he credits Kompany’s communication, leadership, and emphasis on defensive details for helping him take another step forward.
For Bayern, that’s an encouraging sign. The ability to help established internationals continue evolving—not just develop young prospects—is one of the traits of a top manager. If Kompany can continue getting that level of growth from players like Tah, Bayern’s back line should only become stronger as the season progresses.
