Will Osula’s future at Newcastle United remains uncertain heading into the January transfer window. Still, there is no firm expectation internally that he will leave next month, according to The Athletic’s
Chris Waugh.
Responding to a fan question in his latest Newcastle Q&A, Waugh pushed back on suggestions that Osula’s absence points to an imminent exit.
“There is a chance Osula leaves in January but it is far from certain,” Waugh wrote.
Osula has not featured since the defeat at West Ham on November 2, with his ankle issue deteriorating rather than improving, which is the main reason he has lacked playing time and could look for a fresh restart elsewhere.
“The ankle problem which has afflicted him for much of the season has worsened and that is why he has not featured,” Waugh wrote, adding that while the 22-year-old could return next month, Eddie Howe has only offered a vague timeframe.
Osula’s name has resurfaced in Germany following his near-move to Frankfurt last summer.
“Osula was close to joining Eintracht Frankfurt on deadline day in the summer, and the Bundesliga outfit remain keen on the 22-year-old forward,” Waugh confirmed.
However, Waugh cautioned strongly against reports suggesting a deal is already lined up, denying that information outright.
“Reports in Germany that a deal has all but been agreed are premature,” Waugh wrote.
Crucially, Waugh explained that Osula’s short-term future is tied closely to the fitness and availability of other attacking options at Newcastle United.
“Osula’s future is inextricably linked to both Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade staying fit, as well as another young, versatile striker being signed,” Waugh wrote.
That final condition may prove key.
“The latter is definitely not a given and the suggestion from some at the club is that Osula will not be leaving next month,” Waugh added.
Looking further ahead, Waugh indicated that an eventual departure still feels likely, just not imminent. For now, Osula’s January status appears unresolved, with injury recovery, squad depth and transfer plans all set to determine whether any movement materialises.
“The likelihood remains that he will depart at some stage in 2026, but that may not be until the summer.”
