Tottenham Hotspur Women have been extremely fun to watch this season and that’s in part thanks to the standout performances of Olivia Holdt. Now, she’s been rewarded with a new, long-term deal
(I’d love to tell you exactly how long, but lately, Spurs have a new habit of not sharing this information with us). This is simply thrilling news. Olivia has had 6 goals and 3 assists in the WSL so far (two of which were nominated for goal of the month), and a goal and an assist for Denmark. She’s also been
nominated for player of the month twice, and she’s collected a fair few player of the match awards too. (Do you want to watch an Oli compilation? Of course you do.)
“It’s a statement for us to have her extend with the Club,” said Martin Ho, speaking about Olivia’s new deal. “Olivia’s creativity, her personality, and intuition as an individual will add components to our attacking play. I’m delighted she has decided to stay because I feel we can contribute to her future ambitions and she can contribute to our ambitions as a Club.”
Holdt first joined Spurs under Robert Vilahamn in January of 2025. She took a little while to settle in – partly because she was coming off a serious leg injury, and partly because the team was in total shambles last year. At the time of her signing, Vilahamn said, “From next season I think she will be one of the best players in this league.” I don’t have a lot of love left for that man after last season, but I’m starting to think he might have been right.
Since I’m a Spurs fan, I’ve been getting more and more concerned every time Olivia puts up a POTM performance. There’s a trend in the WSL of top teams (i.e. Chelsea, Arsenal, City, United) buying up all the best talent from the best performing side in the WSL midtable. You saw it when Manchester United refused to do business with us over Grace Clinton and triggered Celin Bizet’s release clause after our 6th place finish, and then last year when Arsenal bought Olivia Smith from an excellent Liverpool side (and I could go on). That’s part of why you see midtable sides pingponging from near-Champions League contention to near-relegation in consecutive seasons.
With Holdt entering the last year of her deal, I worried history might repeat itself. But Spurs have proved me wrong and secured her services for at least a bit longer. I should’ve known when the social team asked her what song she’d most like to walk out to at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and she answered “Glory, Glory Tottenham Hotspur.”
Anyway, please join me in celebrating the good news. It’s been a joy to watch Holdt light up the WSL this season, and long may it continue!
