Negotiations for a new deal for Dayot Upamecano and Bayern Munich have been complicated this season, as the French center back has been drawing interest from other top clubs throughout Europe and his camp
has been asking for more money than the German Rekordmeister were originally prepared to offer. Both Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain have expressed serious interest in acquiring the center back next summer. As things currently stand, his contract with the Bundesliga champions runs through June 2026, so Bayern is in crunch time for getting a new deal negotiated.
Per information from Kicker’s Frank Linkesch and Georg Holzner (via @iMiaSanMia), Bayern wants to speed up their contract talks and negotiations with Upamecano and want to try to reach a resolution at some point in January. Club president Herbert Hainer recently expressed his optimism that the club and the center back will reach an agreement for a contract extension and that optimism is reportedly shared by the remainder of the club’s front office and supervisory board.
Upamecano has become one of the key figures in Bayern’s defense, though he didn’t exactly hit the ground running in his first season at the club after joining from RB Leipzig. It’s taken him a few seasons to become one of the first names on Vincent Kompany’s team sheets, but he did have his fair share of injury struggles and had to adjust to different managers in Kompany, Thomas Tuchel, and Julian Nagelsmann.
Now that Upamecano has found his feet and become one of Bayern’s most important players in the squad, he feels very comfortable at the club and in the city of Munich. He can very much imagine extending his contract, but it will ultimately come down to the details on offer — wages, bonuses, add-ons, etc. Bayern just face a bit of a race against time since the center bac can technically start talking to other clubs as early as this January with regard to a potential move away from the club if negotiations were to fall through at Bayern.
Right now, Upamecano earns roughly 10 million euros per year, which is the 12th highest at the club. All of Manuel Neuer, Harry Kane, Joshua Kimmich, Serge Gnabry, Jamal Musiala, Alphonso Davies, Michael Olise, Luis Diaz, Leon Goretzka, Jonathan Tah, and Kim Min-jae currently earn more than him per year.
