I’ve had dibs on the Ranger Suarez annual recap for three or four years now, and this time I didn’t even have to trade with one of my fellow TGP contributors for it. Sadly for me and the other Ranger Suarez fans,
this is likely to be the last season recap for him in a Phillies uniform. (I hope I’m wrong!)
2025 stats:
12-8, 26 games, 157.1 innings, 3.20 ERA, 137 ERA+, 151 K, 38 BB, 4.0 fWAR
What went right :
Suarez set career-highs in innings pitched, quality starts, and fWAR in 2025, had one of the lowest walk percentages and one of the highest strikeout percentages of his career, and either matched or out-performed many of his personal statistics from 2024, his All-Star season.
In his only start of the post season, he allowed just one run on five hits and one walk in five innings against the Dodgers while striking out four.
What went wrong:
The negatives for Suarez year after year always seem to revolve around the same thing: Injuries. Suarez’s 2025 season was book-ended by injuries as he started the season on the IL with back stiffness and finished it with the scary comebacker that hit him in the leg. Though the comebacker didn’t rule him out for the postseason, it did put a dampener on the end of his season and limited his ability to be used in October.
The future with the Phillies:
This is the most unsure Ranger Suarez’s future has been with the Phillies, who have at least extended a qualifying offer to him. Sadly for Ranger fans, it’s likely he will sign elsewhere. The Phillies already have a rotation of Zack Wheeler (health pending), Cristopher Sanchez, Aaron Nola, Jesus Luzardo, and Taijuan Walker committed for 2026. They also expect Andrew Painter to be ready for the Major Leagues at some point as well. Unless they are feeling uncertain about Wheeler’s return from injury or Painter’s readiness, it’s hard to see a place for Ranger on next year’s roster. He’s expected to be one of the top starting pitchers available in free agency, and Jon Heyman predicts he’ll receive a five-year contract worth $135 million. While that’s doable for the Phillies, there will certainly be other teams interested that could offer him a better deal with a more stable spot in their rotation.
