Liverpool attacking midfielder Harvey Elliott has today completed his loan move to Valencia, with the 23-year-old joining Carlos Corberán’s side in search of playing time after a difficult two years. A club option sees Elliott under contract at Liverpool through 2028, and he is expected to return next summer.
When the 2023-24 season ended, Elliott appeared to be on the cusp of taking the next big step in his career and going from rotational squad option to regular starter, with the boyhood Liverpool
fan having impressed under Jürgen Klopp and seemingly set for a long future at the club as the creative fulcrum.
The following season, though, saw the arrival of Arne Slot. The new head coach never seeming as enamoured by the player as Kl0pp had been. Add in a few injuries and struggles to rediscover form, and 2024-25 was something of a write-off and in the end it felt as though he might have to move on from the club.
A season-long loan to Aston Villa followed, but a £30M purchase clause set to trigger if he made ten appearances for the club backfired and led to him being frozen out when Villa decided they didn’t want to pay it, and the two clubs failed to agree a January termination that would have returned him to the Reds.
All told, it was a disaster of a loan for all involved, and most of all for Elliott himself. He returned to Liverpool this summer looking to impress new head coach Andoni Iraola but his fitness never looked to be at the required level and if anything he seemed less than the player he had been two summers ago.
That reality meant it would always be difficult to keep him around in the first team picture, at least if the goal was for him to see significant minutes. Hopefully, Valencia and the promise of regular playing time for the mid-table La Liga side will be the answer to getting Elliott’s career properly back on track.
