A highly-anticipated showdown between WBC Welterweight champion, Ryan Garcia, and WBA Super Welterweight champion, Teofimo Lopez, is in advanced talks to take place in the first quarter of 2027, per a report from The Ring’s Mike Coppinger.
Garcia is coming off a spectacular second-round knockout win over Zuffa Boxing’s Conor Benn just last month (see it here), which was his first-ever title defense after winning the belt with an impressive win over Mario Barrios earlier this year.
Shortly after the
fight Garcia called for a showdown with Lopez, who was sitting ringside watching “King Ry” paint his masterpiece. That prompted Lopez to attempt to get into the ring for what we can only assume was a friendly and standard staredown, but was intercepted by security, causing a bit of a raucous.
As for Lopez, he bounced back from his loss to Shakur Stevenson — who is now a Zuffa Boxing fighter — with an impressive performance and victory over Rolando Romero two months ago. With the win, Lopez won the WBO Super Welterweight title and improved his overall record to an impressive 23-2.
This is a great matchup between two young fighters looking to up their stock in the boxing world that can use some stars seeing as how some of the greats have retired (Terence Crawford) or are seemingly on the tail-end of their careers (Canelo Alvarez). The winner will take a huge step forward to become the face of boxing, and set himself up for a nice payday in his next outing, possibly against Devin Haney or the aforementioned Shakur Stevenson.
