Indiana football may be in the market for a quarterback this coming offseason.
The Hoosiers have enjoyed great success at the position through two seasons under head coach Curt Cignetti, with Kurtis Rourke
guiding the offense to a 11-2 finish in 2024 and Fernando Mendoza winning the 2025 Heisman Trophy on top of the Big Ten Championship.
There’s options at the position heading into 2026 with Alberto Mendoza waiting in the wings, Tyler Cherry’s return from injury and potential additions through the transfer portal. We’ll be going through several candidates that Indiana could look at.
Indiana football transfer targets: Quarterback
- Josh Hoover, TCU
- Dylan Raiola, Nebraska
- Beau Pribula, Missouri
- Drew Mestemaker, North Texas
Brendan Sorsby, Cincinnati
No potential transfer portal quarterbacks are more familiar with Indiana than Sorsby.
His career began with the Hoosiers as a late signee after the program hired Walt Bell as offensive coordinator after the 2021 season. He sat behind Connor Bazelak and others in 2022 before competing for the starting job with Tayven Jackson in 2023, ultimately starting the final stretch of that season prior to Tom Allen’s dismissal.
Sorsby transferred to Cincinnati not long after and has been the Bearcats’ starter ever since. His stats are as follows:
- 2024: 2,813 passing yards, 18 passing touchdowns, 7 interceptions. Completed 64% of his passes. 447 rushing yards, 9 rushing touchdowns.
- 2025: 2,800 passing yards, 27 passing touchdowns, 5 interceptions. Completed 61.6% of his passes. 580 rushing yards, 9 rushing touchdowns.
Sorsby’s production speaks for itself, these are pretty solid numbers in 2025 and he brings versatility as a runner. The lone concern would be his completion percentage, which could improve in a better situation with more talent around him.
Beyond the raw stats, Sorsby has a few high-end traits such as his athleticism and arm strength that could generate some NFL interest. Indiana’s already sent one quarterback, Rourke, to the NFL and Mendoza projects as an early first round selection in next spring’s draft.
There’s enough reason for this to be a fit for both sides given Sorsby’s traits and production and Indiana’s track record for quarterback development. As one of the top quarterbacks in the portal, Sorsby will draw his share of suitors.
