The Bruins will be heading back to Europe next season!
The NHL announced this morning that the B’s will play two games in Munich, Germany, during the 2027-2028 season as part of the league’s Global Series.
This marks the Bruins second franchise EuroTrip during the modern era, with the team also playing regular season games in Czechia back in the 2010.
(“Modern era” excludes a 23-game barnstorming tour across Europe back in 1959.)
The B’s last international foray came in 2018, when they played a couple
of preseason games in China.
If you’re an optimist, it’s worth pointing out that both of the seasons featuring these trips ended with the Bruins making it to the Stanley Cup Final, so…GOOD VIBES ONLY.
While things can change with these games more than a season away, the Bruins currently have a pretty solid contingent of German players/coaches, including Marco Sturm, JJ Peterka, and Lukas Reichel.
Peterka is a Munich native who also played for EHC Red Bull Munchën, so this will be a special trip for him.
It’s not immediately clear who the Bruins will be playing in their overseas games, nor do we know the dates.
However, the majority of recent regular-season Global Series games have occurred in November, with some in October as well.
As part of the Bruins announcement on Thursday, the league also announced that the Edmonton Oilers will play two regular season games in Cologne in 2027-2028.
The league and the PA also announced a partnership with legendary German soccer club/global brand Bayern Munich, one that aims to “accelerate the growth of hockey in Germany and the development of FC Bayern in North America.”
This will be done through a mix of community engagement, content/marketing initiatives, and “cross-sport collaboration,” which we can only hope means teams facing each other in their respective sports.
I’d give Bayern the edge against the Bruins on a soccer field, but think the B’s could hold their own on the ice.
