It’s rinse and repeat here at Black Shoe Diaries with our weekly MVP award.
Once again, Penn State lost – and once again there weren’t many bright spots outside of Kaytron Allen.
Well, until at least Nicholas
Singleton showed some of the things that we’ve expected all year long.
So, though Penn State lost 38-14 to the No. 1 Buckeyes on Saturday, let’s say some good things about the two guys who scored those first-half touchdowns that had the Lions down just 17-14 and dreaming of an upset.
Interim coach Terry Smith said all week that Penn State would need to run the ball well in order to have a shot against Ohio State. That showed on the game’s first play when Allen got loose for a 26-yard run, which wound up being tied for Penn State’s best play from scrimmage on the day.
Allen ran hard against the vaunted Ohio State defense, finishing with 76 yards on 21 carries and a touchdown in the second quarter’s final seconds. Allen also picked up eight yards on a shovel pass in that same second-quarter stretch that was key in keeping the drive alive.
Meanwhile, Singleton led Penn State in receiving yards on the day, coming away with three catches for 28 yards. That included a nice 16-yard pickup on a short screen pass to the flat that came on Penn State’s most impressive drive of the day.
Trailing 10-0 and with things getting away from them quickly, the Lions mounted a nice drive that ultimately was capped by Singleton’s three-yard touchdown run.
Neither Singleton nor Allen has had the year they imagined, but both were up to the task of at least competing on Saturday at Ohio Stadium.
